Receipt Scan

Last checked

A receipt photo fills in your Put Away: it matches the lines it can to what you checked off, asks about anything it is not sure of, adds exact amounts and the receipt's date, and catches what you bought but forgot to check off or never listed.

Scan a receipt

Start from any of these:

  • Scan the receipt after you tap Done shopping · Put it away on the list.
  • Scan receipt at the top of Put Away, or the photo button beside it to pick a photo you already took.
  • Add on the Pantry, then Scan a receipt. This opens Put Away; tap Scan receipt there.
  • On iPad, Scan a receipt in the sidebar.

Fit the whole receipt in the frame. Lay it flat and find some light. It takes a few seconds to read.

If you have no Put Away open, the receipt starts one.

What will you use it on?

We'll email you a link to confirm. Nothing is kept until you tap it.

Check what it read

Your Put Away now says what the receipt found, like "4 ready, 2 to check, 1 left off, 1 couldn't be read".

  • Quick check lists the lines it wasn't sure about. One tap each: Yes, Something else or Not food. When it has no guess, the buttons are Pick a food and Not food. A return on the receipt shows only Skip, since it won't go in the pantry.
  • Did you get...? asks about things on your list that aren't on the receipt.
  • Left off holds lines that aren't food, like a bag fee or tax. Tap It's food if one is.
  • A line too smudged to read asks you to Add what it was or Skip it.
  • Food you bought but didn't list shows with an Extra badge.

Then tap Put away. Nothing reaches your pantry before that. Lines you didn't check are skipped, and the app tells you which.

If it doesn't work

  • That doesn't look like a receipt: show the whole itemized receipt, with the store name and total.
  • Couldn't read that receipt: a quick retake usually does it.
  • Receipt ready to read: there was no signal. Your photo stays on the phone until you tap Read receipt now.
  • You can always tap Use my list and put things away without the receipt.

AI and limits

Receipt Scan uses AI. The first time, the app asks Use AI for this? It sends the photo and food lists, never your account name or email. A photo goes as taken, so anything printed in it, like a name on a receipt, a label or a letter, goes too. Keep those out of the shot or cover them. If you tap Not now, scanning is off for you only: the Scan the receipt button after shopping and the shelf scan are hidden, and Put Away says receipt scanning is off, with a link to turn it on. Change it any time: Settings, Preferences & notifications, then the AI features switch.

A kitchen can do up to 10 scans a day, receipts and shelves together. The count starts again at midnight in your kitchen's time zone. Past that, the list and Put Away show Receipt scans are paused for today. Tap it to read "Hey you've scanned a lot today. Try again tomorrow.", then tap Keep going. You can still put things away by hand.

Scans are part of Plus. Free kitchens get 3 a month. See Plus and your subscription. For what Receipt Scan does in a few lines, see Turn a receipt into a pantry update.
