Kitchens, people and roles
Last checked
A kitchen is the people who share one pantry. Everyone in it sees the same pantry, shopping lists, recipes and plan.
Invite someone
Only Owners invite people.
- Open Settings, then People, and tap Add someone.
- Pick They'll use the app.
- Choose What can they do? (Editor, Viewer or Owner) and tap Create invite link.
- Tap Share invite link to send it by text or email. On the web, tap Copy invite link and paste it into a message.
Each link lets one person in and works for 7 days. The person taps it, signs in, and sees You're invited with what their role can do. They tap Join and the kitchen's name, like Join Rivera Kitchen. If a link stops working, send a new one.
What each role can do
- Owner: everything, plus who's in the kitchen. Owners invite and remove people, change roles and pick the main list. A kitchen can have more than one Owner, and any Owner can remove anyone, other Owners included.
- Editor: changes the pantry, lists, recipes and plan.
- Viewer: sees everything, adds to the shopping list, ticks things off and puts the shopping away. A Viewer can't otherwise change the pantry or recipes, so can't scan a shelf.
To change someone's role or remove them, an Owner taps their name on People.
Someone who won't log in
Nobody under 13 gets their own account. For a young child, or anyone who just eats with you, an Owner adds them without a login:
- Settings, People, Add someone.
- Pick They won't log in, type their name and leave Eats here on.
- Tap Add to your kitchen, then Set their food & diet (the button names them, like Set Sam's food & diet), so dinners plan around their allergies and favorites, and you still check labels.
You look after what they eat for them.
Who eats here
Dinner ideas plan around everyone who eats here. Your own switch is I eat here, on your kitchen's page in Settings (tap the kitchen card). Turn it off if you only shop for this kitchen.
Below it, Share my food needs lets this kitchen see your allergies and diet, so dinners here plan around them and you still check labels. It's off until you turn it on. The app checks the ingredients it knows about and can miss things, so see Reload and allergies and always check labels.
More than one kitchen
You can be in more than one kitchen, each with its own pantry and lists. Tap the kitchen name at the top of the screen to switch. On iPad and a wide screen, it's at the top of the sidebar. Everything you add goes to the kitchen named there. To join another kitchen, open the invite link someone sent you.
Leave a kitchen
On your kitchen's page in Settings, tap Leave this kitchen. It takes effect at once, on every device.
- What you added stays, marked "Former member". Your Private Lists there are deleted.
- You're offered your own kitchen with a copy of the recipes and your Private Lists. The offer waits for 30 days.
- If you're the only Owner, you pick who owns it next first. If nobody else there can log in, leaving deletes the kitchen.
An only Owner can also Delete this kitchen. It deletes the pantry, lists, recipes and plan for everyone, and can't be undone.
